Larimer County District Court Overview

Larimer County District Court is part of Colorado's statewide trial-court system. It sits in the 8th Judicial District with Jackson County. District Court is the broad trial court level for felony criminal cases, civil cases above the County Court limits, domestic-relations cases, juvenile matters, probate, mental-health proceedings, adoptions, and appeals from some lower tribunals or agencies. Probate is not a separate courthouse in Larimer County; it is a District Court subject matter.

Larimer County Court is separate. It handles misdemeanors, traffic, infractions, small claims, and civil claims up to the Colorado county-court limit. Fort Collins Municipal Court is also separate and handles city ordinance violations, municipal traffic, parking, photo enforcement, petty offenses, and local misdemeanors. A felony arrest may move through District Court after filing, while a routine traffic ticket may stay in County Court or Municipal Court.

The U.S. District Court for Colorado source is a federal court source, not the Larimer County District Court, but it helps distinguish state District Court records from federal case records.

Larimer County Court Hierarchy

Colorado's hierarchy begins with the Colorado Supreme Court, then the Colorado Court of Appeals, then state trial courts. District Court is the general-jurisdiction trial court. County Court is the limited-jurisdiction state trial court. Municipal courts are city courts for local ordinance and municipal traffic matters. The hierarchy controls where a case is filed, where a record is kept, and where an appeal may go.

District Court vs County Court

Most record mistakes in Larimer County come from choosing the wrong court level. District Court handles the broadest trial-court work. County Court handles smaller civil cases, small claims, traffic, infractions, and misdemeanors. Municipal Court handles city cases under city authority. The same person may have records in more than one court if an arrest, ticket, municipal warrant, or civil filing involved different laws or agencies.

A Larimer County record search should begin with the event and the charge or claim type. A felony arrest can lead to District Court filing after law-enforcement referral and prosecutor review. A misdemeanor or state traffic case may remain in County Court. A Fort Collins photo radar ticket or city ordinance charge may never enter the state court system. Probate, domestic-relations, juvenile, and mental-health matters begin in District Court because those are District Court case types.

Request District Court Records

District Court record access uses the Colorado Judicial Branch docket search for schedules and the Clerk of Court for copies. The docket search helps find hearing dates and case identifiers. It is not a full document-image system. For copies, use 08RecordRequest@judicial.state.co.us or the statewide court Record/Document Request Form. Include the case number, party names, document names, certification request, contact information, and delivery preference.

Restricted case categories can limit public access. Juvenile, adoption, mental-health, probate protected-person, sealed criminal, and certain domestic-relations filings may require identification, party status, attorney status, a court order, or redaction. That can affect whether a person receives the full file, a docket, a limited copy, or no public copy.

Larimer District Court Programs

Larimer County has a strong local problem-solving and alternatives-to-incarceration ecosystem. Wellness Court and AIIM work with adults whose cases involve mental-health needs in the community justice system. The research notes that Larimer's Wellness Court marked its 10-year anniversary and was the first mental health court accredited by the Colorado Problem Solving Court Statewide Advisory Committee. Larimer also established a competency docket in May 2021 that became a model copied by other Colorado courts.

These programs are not separate constitutional courts. They are specialized calendars, treatment paths, or community-justice programs tied to underlying court cases. The public record may show review hearings, treatment-court status, probation entries, or sentencing changes, while medical and treatment details remain protected.

District Court Appeals

Appeals from Larimer County District Court generally go to the Colorado Court of Appeals, and selected cases may later be reviewed by the Colorado Supreme Court. County Court appeals and certain lower tribunal appeals can also involve District Court depending on the case type. Federal cases are different. Federal civil, criminal, bankruptcy, and appellate records are not stored at the Larimer County Justice Center.

The PACER source is the federal docket and document access system for federal cases.

PACER is relevant only when the case is federal, not when requesting a Larimer County District Court file from the Clerk of Court.

The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals source is also federal and separate from Colorado state appellate courts.

Colorado state appeals from Larimer District Court do not become Tenth Circuit cases unless a separate federal path exists.

State and Federal Courts

Larimer County is in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado for federal matters, and federal appeals go to the Tenth Circuit. Federal bankruptcy cases are handled by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado. Those records use federal systems such as PACER and CM/ECF, not the Colorado Judicial Branch docket search or Larimer Clerk of Court email.
